According to a Harris Poll conducted in October of this year, half of Americans (52%) claim they will purchase toys as gifts this holiday season, while 2 in 5 (42%) will not and 6% are not sure. Three-quarters (77%) of parents with a child under 18 say they plan to purchase toys, while 42% of those who are not parents of a child under 18 say they don’t plan to purchase toys. The Harris poll surveyed 2,343 adults online.

Topping the list of toys expected to be purchased for the upcoming holiday season are books, video games and arts and crafts. The list breaks down as follows:

  • Children’s books
  • Games for consoles
  • Arts and crafts products
  • Board games and dolls
  • Building blocks and bricks
  • Sports equipment
  • Handheld electronic games
  • Game consoles
  • Uncategorized

Overall, the Harris Poll expects shoppers to spend more than they did for the holiday season in 2011.
